José Sulaimán, quien presidió el WBC durante 38 años hasta su fallecimiento en 2014, fue responsable de todos los cambios importantes introducidos por el organismo para hacer que el boxeo sea mejor y más seguro.
Don José tenía una pasión por proteger a los boxeadores, luchó contra el apartheid y cualquier tipo de discriminación y abuso de poder, fue reconocido por las Naciones Unidas y una interminable lista de instituciones de todo el mundo.
Sufria al ver peleadores que alguna vez fueron héroes nacionales y mundiales, terminar viviendo en la pobreza y olvidados por el mundo. Su sueño de crear un fondo para ayudar a los boxeadores necesitados se hizo realidad en 2012 cuando Jean Claude Biver y Ricardo Guadalupe de Hublot se unieron al WBC logrando recaudar una importante cantidad en una subasta de relojes Hublot de lujo, piezas únicas inspiradas en los más grandes campeones legendarios.
Con ese millón de dolares recaudado se inicio la operación del fondo en Nevada Community Foundation (NCF) ; La NCF es una organización independiente sin fines de lucro que administra el Fondo y coordina los pagos de las personas elegibles. La NCF revisa todas las solicitudes de asistencia para garantizar que se cumplan las directrices del Fondo, garantizando que todas las operaciones sean con integridad, honestidad y justicia,
En 2014, el WBC y Fundación Ring Telmex-Telcel llegaron a un acuerdo donde se pactó en proveer apoyo económico al Fondo, a cambio de que los oficiales de ring que participaran en peleas sancionadas por el organismo utilizaran el logo de Ring Telmex-Tecel en sus uniformes. Don Carlos Slim acepto este programa el cual acepto colaborar con $150 000 dolares anuales por 5 años haciendo una aportación total de $750 000.
En 2019 se llevó a cabo otra Cena de Gala Hublot/WBC donde se recaudó 1.2 millones de dólares para el Fondo. Las estrellas que asistieron a este evento de gala fueron: Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, George Foreman, Vitali Klitschko, Oscar De La Hoya, Jeff Fenech, Bernard Hopkins, Hozumi Hasegawa y Lou Shiming. El evento incluyo un gran homenaje al legendario músico Carlos Santana.
Durante 12 años, la NCF ha realizado un trabajo increíble analizando todos los casos, desarrollando nuevas ideas, pero sobre todo apoyando a los boxeadores durante el proceso de inscripción con gran calidad y dedicación.
El Fondo de Boxeadores José Sulaimán ha otorgado más de $ 2 millones de dólares de apoyo a peleadores y expeleadores de Nicaragua, Argentina, Tailandia, China, Colombia, España, Estados Unidos, Filipinas, Panamá, México entre muchos otros países.
Twelf years of the José Sulaiman Fund
José Sulaimán, who presided over the WBC for 38 years until his death in 2014, was responsible for all the major changes introduced by the body to make boxing better and safer.
Don José was dedicated to protecting boxers. He also fought against apartheid as well as any type of discrimination and abuse of power. He was recognized by the United Nations and an endless list of organizations around the world.
He suffered seeing fighters who were once national and world heroes end up living in poverty and forgotten by the world. His dream of creating a fund to help boxers in need came true in 2012 when Hublot’s Jean Claude Biver and Ricardo Guadalupe joined the WBC and raised a significant amount at an auction of luxury Hublot watches, one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by the most great legendary champions.
With that million dollars raised, the operation of the fund began in the Nevada Community Foundation (NCF); NCF is an independent, nonprofit organization that administers the Fund and coordinates payments to eligible individuals. The NCF reviews all requests for assistance to ensure that the Fund’s guidelines are followed, ensuring that all operations are conducted with integrity, honesty and fairness.
In 2014, the WBC and the Ring Telmex-Telcel Foundation reached an agreement in which it was agreed to provide financial support to the Fund, in exchange for ring officials who participated in fights sanctioned by the organization use the Ring Telmex-Tecel logo on their uniforms. Don Carlos Slim accepted this program in which he agreed to collaborate with $150,000 dollars per year for 5 years, making a total contribution of $750,000.
Another Hublot/WBC Gala Dinner was held in 2019, raising $1.2 million for the Fund. For 10 years, the NCF has done an incredible job analyzing all cases, developing new ideas, but above all supporting boxers through the registration process with great quality and dedication.
The José Sulaimán Boxers Fund has awarded more than $2 million dollars in support to fighters and former fighters from Nicaragua, Argentina, Thailand, China, Colombia, Spain, the United States, the Philippines, Panama, Mexico, among many other countries.
